Handmade Ornament

Time is flying by! It's hard to believe that Christmas is right around the corner. Things are so busy right now, but I just had to take a minute to post pictures of the ornament I made!

Our Sunday School class has an annual GNO Christmas party with a "Dirty Santa" ornament swap, and I challenged myself to make my ornament this year.

I downloaded this pattern from SWAK and the tutorial for the pieced pillow ornament/door hanger from You Can Make This.com. I added the bow and button (simply because I just can't leave well enough alone!)on my own, and I just adore the pom-pom fringe on the bottom! This was a terrific "scrap buster" project and I am so tickled with how cute it turned out! There are so many fun ideas on that site...I wish I had time to sit and browse through them all.

Why I never throw away scrap fabric!

This customer needed something fun on this striped shirt and also a Birthday shirt for her little boy.
She chose the Birthday Candle and requested green gingham since it is the Birthday Boy's favorite color.
The striped shirt posed a bit of a problem. It has the distressed look (which I ADORE) and it made it a bit harder to match up with some of the more popular plaids and ginghams that I am using these days. Then I rummaged through a bag of scraps my mom had given me a year ago...and hit JACKPOT! This two-tone blue fabric was left over from a pair of pull on shorts she had sewn for one of my (many) boys 5 years ago!! Needless to say, it is perfect for this fun "J"!!

Quite possibly the cutest Christmas design ever.

This was the first time I stitched out this Three Light design (from Applique Frenzy) and it will NOT be the last!!! This may be the cutest Christmas design ever!! I love the fact that the light bulbs can be ANY fabric you choose, and the monogram is an added bonus!! So many Christmas orders coming in...hard to believe it's right around the corner!!

So busy these days...not just with sewing, but just with life in general! I am still having Fall orders come in along with some VERY cute Christmas orders. Here are just a few things from my machines!

First of all, a pair of coordinating brother/sister outfits for some future Alabama fans. (see, I told you my machine wasn't biased!) LOVE this for the little sis/ Big brother outfit! A sweet little gingham jumper and a simple (Garanimals!) T shirt.

And for fall, the ever-popular Pilgram Turkey from Linnie Pinnie. This little gobbler has been stitched out my machine more times than I can count. I still love the irony of the hat on the turkey! The Lab Patch is another favorite. It is so great to have some "Big Boy" designs!

Fun Customer Order

Long time with no post, I know. My life has been CRAZY!! All kinds of fun, wild and noisy crazy...so I am not complaining. My machines have been running, but it seems like I have just enough time to get things stitched out and then it is time to go to carpool, school, work, etc...so no time for pictures!

The black ring at the base is actually to make the bowl skid-proof so it won't scoot across the floor while the pet is eating. Backpacks!

It's that time again...back to school. And I must say that I am NOT ready for mine to go back just yet! I have really enjoyed our summer together!

However, I DO love the back to school hub-bub...new backpacks, new lunchboxes, new sneakers and new crayons. Getting them ready to go back always brings back the excitement I felt when I saw the things my mom brought home for my back to school days!
(It also means SEC FOOTBALL...but that's for another post!)
My machine has been busy monogramming backpacks and lunchboxes. I love the Stephen Josephs for the little ones, but for the older crowd you just can't beat the LL Bean backpacks. There are so many cute colors this year and those things really hold up well!

Peas In A Pod

Another Multiple Momma requested these bibs for her boy/girl twins, but was unsure about the bow being pinned or handstitched onto the bib. So I merged the bow from the Applique Cafe Octopus onto the Pea in a Pod design, altered the size, rotated it and just made it part of this design!

Kanzashi Flowers

My newest hobby: Kanzashi Flowers! Y'all know how I love to save an item from the landfill and give it a new life, so when my husband handed me a fistfull of neckties that had tiny little stains on them I simply couldn't toss them into the trashcan. So I put them in the fabric stash thinking surely there must be a way to recycle these! Then I remembered an article in Sew Beautiful about these kanzashi flowers. I had made one for my daughters Easter dress out of a cotton fabric, so I thought I would give it a try with one of these neckties. Out came my trusty old friend, Mr. Seam Ripper, and we took apart those ties, ironed them out and started cutting.

What do you think?

This one is for my mom, but I plan on making a few more to add to The Shop. I also plan on making one to add to this very plain boxy denim jacket I purchased but only wore once because "it just needed something". I think this little beauty is just what it needed!

Taking orders again!

Now that the cushions are recovered, potty training is at 75% and outfits for the twins are nearing completion, I am ready to start taking orders once again.

I will post pictures of new designs I have purchased for Fall and Winter soon...but for now here is a pic of a shirt I just finished for one of the twins. The "football alphabet" applique is from Planet Applique and the font is MWP "tipsy". First football practice is tonight so we've got to start getting ready!!

Recovered patio cushions!

WHEW!! The patio cushions have finally been recovered! It was a long project, and by no means professional by any stretch of the imagination, but I have to admit that I am really happy with how it turned out. Sewing box edge covers with hidden zippers probably wasn't the best "beginner" project but there's nothing like necessity to hasten your learning process!!
A little background info: Our home was built in 1949 so the patio is an old painted concrete surface that originally had a wrought iron railing. The railing was in really sad shape when we bought this house 2 years ago but since we were gutting the inside of the house, the patio took back burner. Then last summer we replaced the railing with treated wood but I never found any furniture that "went" with the old style of the house. Then driving home one Sunday, I spied one of my favorite signs..."Estate Sale"...and of course I turned onto that road. There I spied this great old 6 piece patio set...all in great condition, but the cushions were in need of some TLC. So I wrote a check, loaded it up and brought it home. It is perfect. We had also "inherited" some patio furniture from grandparents that had seat covers in a pretty yellow floral print. (I am not a floral kind of girl, but for some reason I really like these. Plus, I hate not to try and reuse something that is in perfectly good condition.) So I ordered this yellow fabric online and started sewing. I didn't use a pattern, but sort of followed (loosely) some online tutorials, tweaking them to this particular project.
Like I said, it isn't professional, but for less than $300 (including the price I paid for the 6 piece patio set) I got exactly the look I was after. It is a great place to relax with my morning coffee, watch the kids play in the afternoon and have an evening cocktail with Hubs!

Monogrammed shortalls

Part of the reason I decided to take a little "break" from customer orders is so I can finish up quite a few sewing projects for my own children. These cute little shortalls are made from a Martha Pullen pattern using fabric I ordered from Chez Ami. I found the glass buttons at JoAnns (love that they look like marbles!) and the font is "Garton" from Jolson Designs. (a GREAT font for little boys!) I am so pleased with how they turned out! This is our last summer for shortalls and johnjohns so I plan on putting them on my boys every chance I can get!

Appliques! Not just for Kids T Shirts!!

Pop Tarts, Patio Cushions and Potty Training

What do these 3 things have in common? They pretty much sum up the past 2 days around here. The patio cushions are tedious work, but I have learned a valuable lesson with them: A new seam-ripper can change your life!! I am a "Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do or Do without" kind of girl (thanks, Granny!) but this most certainly does NOT apply to a seam ripper. In fact, when JoAnns or Hancocks has their next notions sale I may just buy 10 of those little handy things!
I have also discovered that PopTarts, although not a part of this nutrition-filled breakfast, are indeed a great summertime snack! Plain, toasted, topped with ice cream or cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters...these babies are my new afternoon go-to!
The Potty Training is just not fun. For them or for me. But we will press on. Because I am tired of buying Huggies. And because they just turned three. It is time. Ugh.
On a brighter note, I am discovering that applique is not just for kids clothing anymore. Fun project in the works...stay tuned!!

Mom needs a break

I will be taking a little embroidery break...the kiddos are out of school and we have more pressing issues to deal with. Like Potty Training. I had to remove my Bissell Spot Bot from its resting place up on the highest shelf because I have had to clean the playroom carpet no less than 6 times. The old method of rewarding with stickers and candy is clearly not working, so its time to crack down on these two. I also purchased an old wrought iron patio set at an estate sale (I would so much rather have something old than something new) and I am in the process of recovering the cushions. All 10 of them. Good times, I know. My new best friend is my seam ripper...

All this to say, I won't be taking any new orders till mid July. If you need a Birthday Boy/Girl shirt done please feel free to send me an email and I will do my best to accomodate you!! I know my fellow "multiple moms" love having the matching birthday shirts for our little ones!

Beach Cover-Ups

This is a birthday gift for my niece!
I have seen these pillowcase dress-type coverups on a few Etsy sites and thought I would try my hand at one. I didn't use a pattern but sort of used one of my boys to get a few measurements. Basic pillowcase dresses are extremely easy to make, especially if you use an actual pillowcase to make it with...but in this case I had a basic white towel on hand so I improvised. I used red bias tape around the arms to coordinate with the red polkadot grosgrain ribbon.

The little jellyfish is from Planet Applique.

Gigantic Chalkboard!!

Or, "What Do You Do With A Bare Wall That You Can't Hang Anything On Because Your Kids Keep Knocking It All Off."

This huge bare wall in our remodeled kitchen just really needed something. Problem is, this is a really high traffic area going between the breakfast table and the kid's backback station, so everything that got hung there just wound up in a broken heap in the floor.

Bring in the chalkboard paint. I just taped off the area I wanted and started painting. Five coats total, but this stuff dries so quickly that it took no time all! Then we measured off what I had painted and scrounged around our scraps of trim left over from the remodel to find four strips that were long enough. Hubs mitered the corners, I primed and painted them, distressed them, painted some more and we nailed them to the wall! Probably my favorite part of this room!

When it's "Not Quite Right"

We've all gotten them...the monogrammed gift that just isn't right. Names mispelled, monograms not right, or just something that we just wish was different. It's not like you can "regift" it (oh come on, you know you've done it) so what do you do? Sometimes the stitches can be picked out (a very tedious task that sometimes leaves fabric flaws) but quite often the stitches need to stay. (Like in laminated fabrics or insulated items...because of the high stitch count, certain designs will actually act to perforate the fabric, so if you remove them a chunk of your embroidered item literally just falls apart.)

So what do you do?

A Patch! You have heard me sing the praises of a patch on several occasions and I am singing that same song this time. I stitched the patch onto water soluble stabilizer (2 layers) then washed away the remaining stabilizer, pressed the patch and sewed it directly to the cooler. I think I may do a few more like this just because I love how cute it turned out!

Reverse Appliques

What do you do when you have a brand new T shirt that gets stained the VERY first time the wear it?!? (Or any time they wear it, for that matter!)

A REVERSE APPLIQUE!!

In this particular case, I had the shorts that matched this little shirt and I just wasn't willing to put it into the rag pile just yet, but that stain was not going anywhere. And believe me, I wage warfare on stains, so I had tried it all.
These fun appliques involve placing a coordinating piece of fabric on the backside of the shirt, embroidering the letter or design, and then cutting the "offending" part of the shirt away! Even if it doesn't get rid of 100% of the stain, it really masks the tiny parts well. And the cutest part of this (in my opinion) is the way the jersey knit "curls" back after it gets washed. I snapped this particular picture before this shirt hit the wash so you can't see it here, but I have lots more of these designs just begging for me to stitch them out on my boys shirts...what kid doesn't want a lightning bolt, or a skull, or a guitar...so many to choose from!

This is also a great option for those striped shirts that you find in the Dollar Bin at WalMart and Target...not so much on their own, but so awesome with a reverse applique!

Monogrammed Pony-O's

Sweet little Pony-O's!

These are simply covered buttons that I monogrammed. The 3-letter is in MWP "Arabesque" and the single letter is Digistitches "French Dot". They have a hair elastic looped through the back and are a precious addition to any ponytail! I will also loop some long thin ribbon for a "streamer" effect, but those are easily removed if the little girl doesn't want ribbons each and every time.

I have more fun projects in the works using these covered buttons. Stay tuned...

First Week of Summer!!

This is what we will be doing Every. Single. Day. this week. Yep, a whole bunch of NOTHING. Eating watermelon in our PJs. Swinging on the playset. Taking naps (fingers crossed here).

My four are out of school and that warrants a celebration. So you won't be hearing much from me and that's ok.

Big Boys

There are so many cute designs out there for little girls and little boys, but there is always that fine line of when things start to look too "babyish". With girls I think there is more of a grace period...not so much with boys. This is definately our last summer for button-ons and john-johns, and even a few of those patterns are starting to make my husband raise his eyebrows when I get them dressed for church.

So when they are too big for bubbles and too small for bowties, what is a momma of boys to do for "church attire"?

You Say It's Your Birthday...

It's My Birthday, Too...

That's right! The twins are turning THREE! So hard for me to believe. Everyone with multiples has told us that after they turn three it gets so much easier...but I'll have to say that they really haven't been all that difficult! I think mostly because they pretty much keep each other entertained but also because we are so much more laid back with them as compared to our older children. With multiples, you simply cannot answer every single little cry as soon as they cry it, so I think we just cut ourselves alot of slack from the get-go.
We plan to celebrate this special day with just our family (there's so many of us, we are our own party.) over some yummy cake and with the boys wearing these cute outfits. This is the Embroidery Boutique "circle patch" merged using Sew What Pro with the Planet Applique "birthday numbers". I made a simple pair of matching shorts in the orange and white gingham.

Happy Birthday Babies!! (I guess I'll have to stop calling them the "babies" now that they are turning three!)

Baby Trio

My machines have really been humming these days...lots of T shirts, baby gifts and Easter baskets. My camera has been spending alot of time in the car going to the ballfields so I haven't taken as many pictures as I'd like. Here are just a few things that I have been working on!

Resurrection Cookies

With Easter approaching, it is so easy to get caught up in all of the hoopla that tends to want to tag along with it...buying new dresses/outfits for Sunday, getting ready for the Easter Bunny, planning the huge meal...

But when you get right down to it, it is all just that. Hoopla. Fluff. As artificial and processed as the chocolate-flavored bunnies that you buy at the store. And just as hollow.

Our risen Lord. That's what Easter is about. Our Savior nailed to a cross just because He loves us that much.

Here is a tradition our family has had since my oldest was a tiny baby. They ask for it every year and it is just as magical for us as it is for out children. I hope you will enjoy! (The source of this recipe is unknown. I even searched on Google and Bing. My mother in law gave us this recipe 11 years ago and I treasure the stained, faded paper it is printed on.)

You will need:
1 cup whole pecans
1 teaspoon vinegar
3 egg whites
a pinch salt
1 cup sugar
a zipper baggy
1 wooden spoon
scotch tape
Bible

Instructions:
These are to be made the evening before Easter. Preheat oven to 300F.
*** (this is very important --- don't wait until you are half done with the recipe).
Place pecans in zipper baggy and let children beat them with the wooden spoon
to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested. He
was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read: John 19:1-3

Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 teaspoon vinegar into mixing bowl.
Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar
to drink. Read: John 19:28-30

Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life
to give us life. Read: John 10:10&11

Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest
into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers,
and the bitterness of our own sin. Read: Luke 23:27

So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the
sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to
know and belong to Him. Read: Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16

Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed.
Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins
have been cleansed by Jesus. Read: Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3

Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoon onto waxed paper covered cookie sheet.
Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid.
Read: Matthew 27:57-60

Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF.

Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door.
Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read: Matthew 27:65-66

GO TO BED!

Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight.
Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read: John 16:20&22

On Resurrection Sunday (Easter) morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked
surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter Jesus' followers were amazed
to find the tomb open and empty. Read: Matthew 28:1-9

Spring Outfit

This sweet little set of ruffled shorts and monogrammed T shirt make me so happy that Spring is finally here!

The shirt is Garanimals (lots of fun colors to choose from!) with an Applique Cafe "petal patch" monogrammed with MWP "tipsy".
The shorts are my own design...I just laid a pair of size 3 shorts on the fold of the fabric and started cutting! I like doing it this way for toddlers...if you've found a pair of shorts that fit them well, it's just the best way to ensure a good fit!

I love this patch!

If you need to cover up an existing monogram, a stain or just want to tie in a cute shirt with a pair of pants or shorts, this patch is perfect! I love being able to use 2 different fabrics on one patch, and I have many thread colors and monogram fonts to add to it!

Grant you, I think that the holiday items found in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog are just precious, but the prices?...Um, not so much. This savvy shopper found these little cuties at JoAnns for 40% off! Personalize them and I would put them up against PB Kids any day of the week.

And now she still has money in her wallet for some chocolate bunnies!

New Twin Design!

I adore this new design!! These little "peas in a pod" are perfect for nursery decor, onesies or burp pads and bibs! Are there twins in your future? If so, fasten your seat belts because it is a wild and crazy (but oh, so wonderful) ride!! If you have a girlfriend having twins soon, these will be the hit of the babyshower.

The bow can be removed for washing. (or not put on at all) Both little peas have a sprig of curly hair on top of their little heads that can be done in any color or you could have little balds heads as well!

Baby Gift

A girl in my Sunday School class is expecting her second baby! To celebrate, we're throwing a little shower for her and her baby boy. She says the nursery will be in blue with green frog accents, so I purchased these adorable frog designs from Lynnie Pynnie to embellish a burp pad and terry bib.(I LOVE these bibs!!) The great thing about these designs is that she offers an applique and a fill stitch version, so I could make the items coordinating! The font used is Monogram Wizard Plus "Tipsy", a favorite for boys. I was able to merge the font and frogs using Sew What Pro. I also made and monogrammed these sweet baby booties (sort of a mish-mash of 3 different patterns I found online) with some royal blue twill and lined them with a royal blue and white soft gingham. It needed something more, so I did a little monogrammed luggage tag as well.

Side note: A few of you have asked about the baby booties, and to be honest I really haven't found one pattern that I just love for this particular style. The best advice I can offer after having made several of these to give as gifts (and several that wound up in the trash can) is: 1) finish all your seams. Remember that little baby feet are going in these so you want the inside to be soft and you also don't want your edges to fray. Many online patterns and tutorials don't tell you to do this and you'll regret it if you don't. 2) don't just make slits in the lining for your elastic to thread through. Even if you are using fleece or some other non-fraying fabric, you still need a little more support so go ahead and make button holes instead.

I am lucky to have married a great guy who is a terrific father and husband, and I had to smile when I saw this video. I can remember a time when his plans probably didn't include a wife, four kids, a mortgage (ok, two for now...) and the responsibilities that come with all of the above. Long days at the office, leaky gutters, bathroom re-remodels, broken appliances, and the ever-haunting mystery of the "grease trap" (if you don't know, don't ask) can loom over his head like a thunder cloud...but through it all, he keeps plugging along, always with a funny little comment ("Don't mind the mule, just load it on the wagon") and the presence of mind to always mention how blessed he is. What a great guy.

I didn't have time to take a picture, but wanted to let everyone who is waiting know that the order I placed has arrived! I ordered a few extras to keep in my "stash" so if you need a gift please let me know and I will pull it for you. The Man In Brown delivered to my doorstep: Market Baskets (again, the collapsible kind) in several yummy colors including the new maroon, travel mugs, sports mugs, golf towels and the most fantastic baby bibs I have ever ordered! Most of the bibs you find are pretty skimpy, if you ask me...but not these. These are what I refer to as "toddler bibs" because they are large enough in size and the terry is thick enough to absorb the mess a toddler can make with certain foods! I am seriously doubting that I will ever sew bibs again after seeing and feeling these. I ordered the dozen in plain white, that way they could be monogrammed, appliqued and/or dressed up with ribbon and trim as people requested. I can't wait to get started on some of these orders! But...

My big embroidery machine was due for servicing, so I took her in for a check up. I could tell it was getting to be that time...lots of upper thread breakage, funny noises and a few things just not coming out quite to my satisfaction. I didn't want to chance messing up on someone's order. I should be getting her back within the week (fingers crossed!) but for now I will be focusing on sewing some Easter outfits for the kiddos.

This was a cutie to make, and very quick, too! The embroidery was the most time-consuming part of the whole project, but the best part...it's not just for Valentine's Day!! Oh no, this little baby will be staying on my bed year-round.

And, are you ready for this?...this whole project cost a whopping $5.75! Yes m'am, you heard me right...I said $5.75. Can I get a high-five from all the gals out there that head to the clearance section first?

Let's start with this yummy microsuede that I scored at JoAnns on clearance plus 50%off, add in the 12x16 pillow form ($4 at 50% off) and this super-cute embroidery design I purchased at Embroidery Library for a whopping $1!!

The burgundy matches our bedding perfectly, and it adds a little ooh-la-la to our bedroom...seriously, they call the 12x16 pillow a "boudoir pillow". Anything that sounds french and goes in your bedroom just oozes ooh-la-la, don't you think?

It's great because there aren't too many Valentine's appliques that could be used for little boys! There are several "sayings" with this file, but with my merging software, you could also put a name or monogram on the heart as well!!

The Apple didn't fall far...

You know what they say..."The apple doesn't fall far from the Tree." I am seeing that in my daughter each day. She loves to draw, paint, cook and sew...and when I saw her with a can of spray paint and she got that same gleam in her eyes, I knew she was My Girl!
She had a project due for science class...she was to make a 3-dimensional animal cell, and it could be out of anything. Her idea? Rice Krispies treats, icing and candy. She drew up the plans, gathered the candy (left over from Halloween...so glad to see that go!) and by getting all of her supplies together and a game plan ready, it took us less than an hour to make this:

Who knew that icing, Nerds, Fruit Roll Ups, Dots, Twizzlers, M&Ms, Laffy Taffy and a Charms Pop could be so scientific!!

Made by you Mondays--Love Note Totes

This week's theme for Made by You Mondays (over at Skip to My Lou) is Valentines Day!

Anyone else just love Ballards Designs like I do? I love the whole French Country look...maybe because it goes with all of my hand-me-down and inherited furniture...we prefer to call it "Parental Provencial". So when I got the new catalog in my mailbox I flipped for these love note totes! But why order one when you can customize it to your colors, decor and even monogram it if you want to! (Plus you can make it as big as you need...in case you're lucky enough to get lots of love notes and maybe even a box of chocolate!)
So I made my own versions:

This one I made for the kids...I used the red striped ticking fabric and then lined it with a soft red cord. I added the embroidery after it was finished and I love the simple little design. They will love finding this hanging on their bedroom or closet door when they come home from school today! I added gussets so it would have a bit more body and be able to stand on its own...it may just find its way to the breakfast table a few times before Feb 14th!
Now, onto the adult version...

I jazzed these up a bit with the cheetah fabric and a monogrammed bold red heart. It is large enough to hold a valentine, box of chocolate and a little velvet box! This one could be hung from the door but is snazzy enough just to lie right on the bed. (Hubba hubba...)

How to Help

We have all seen the images of devestation in Haiti...it is heartbreaking to witness such suffering while we sit in our heated homes on comfy sofas with plenty of fresh water when we turn on our kitchen faucet. There is a definate sense of guilt...the difference between them and us is simply geography. We didn't have an earthquake, they did. Their homes aren't standing anymore, ours are. Most of us have plenty of food in our pantries, they don't know how or when they will be able to feed their children. It is overwhelming. It seems hopeless...yet there is hope. There should always be hope. And help.

Please don't be so overwhelmed that you feel as though whatever you could do just wouldn't be enough. The point isn't to do it all...just do something. Maybe a few dollars that you had budgeted for something that isn't a necessity. I heard this week on the news that 80% of the population of Haiti lives on less than two dollars a day...that's less than most of us spend on a cup of coffee in the morning. (way less if you're going to Starbucks!) It might just seem like a drop in the bucket, but if we all put just one drop in the bucket, eventually we'll have a bucketfull!

So help. There are lots of ways to give, you can call your local church or local branch of the Red Cross. Go to www.umcor.org and not only can you make a donation, but you can find out how to make relief kits and how to send them. Do it now. And if you can, do it again later...they will need help for months and months to come. And pray. They so need our prayer. Pray for this country, their loss and their pain...mothers and fathers who have lost children...children who have lost their parents...the ones left waiting who still haven't found their loved ones...and pray that everyone will do something to help.

Cute, stylish and functional! (and really cheap to make!)

Santa brought my children a portable DVD player that has 2 screens. They primarily use it in the car on long trips but we often use it inside as well. (When someone is sick and confined to their room, during a long wait at the ball field or gym, etc...) So since the original packaging had fallen apart at the seams (literally!) it needed its own little home...preferrably one with handles so it can be toted from place to place. But since it has two screens it needed a soft divider to keep one from scracthing against the other and damaging each others surfaces. I decided to make one!
I am confined to our house today due to a nasty stomach virus that is sweeping throughout our household (3 down, 3 to go) so going out to the fabric store isn't an option. Plus, although I adore the fabric store I really wanted to try and keep this little project "on the cheap" and use what I already had on hand. This little cutie was made using some scraps of prequilted fabric, my handy dandy rotary cutter, a sewing machine and my serger (aka: "Chopper") I added the monogram at the end so there would be no question as to whose bag this is!

On the outside I included a pleated pocket to hold the various cords (I added a snap to help keep it closed) and on the inside I included a divider in a coordinating brown fabric (also prequilted). I also used a piece of left over fabric to make a little fabric envelope to hold the earphones and keep the cords from getting tangled up with the power cords. The fact that I could serge my edges, used a rotary cutter and used prequilted fabric (instead of having to use batting and stabilizer) really made this a quick and (somewhat)easy project!
Doing this project taught me several things:
1) I can often create my own "pattern" if I have my measurements and think things through.
2) You can't do a decent topstitch if you are in a hurry.
3) If I am nice to my serger, she'll be nice to me. I have neglected cleaning Chopper out the way I should. I cleaned her and she purred like a kitten.
4) If you tend to drop pins and not pick them up, at least have enough sense to not walk around barefooted.
And finally: 5) If I can do it, anyone can!!

New Garanimals!

The word is out...Wal Mart has their short sleeved Garanimals on the shelves! There are supposed to be some cute new spring colors, so you'll want to shop early for the best selection. I was working this morning so I haven't had a chance to go yet, but I will post pictures as soon as I shop. These are so perfect for both applique and monogramming...they stitch out really well and hold up like a dream after many many washings!
It was a balmy 29 degrees here this morning so I can't imagine wearing short sleeves just yet! (Actually, I did wear my scrubs today which are short sleeved...but I had on my thermals underneath!! BRRRR!!)

Monogrammed Shopping Bags

In an effort to try and be more earth friendly, I have really cracked down on myself to consistently use my reusable shopping bags intead of the plastic or paper ones. (The problem is remembering to get them out of my car at the grocery store!) I see more and more people using the "green" shopping bags, but wouldn't it be fun to make them prettier as well as more functional?
I wanted to do something special for my children's teachers and when I found these little cuties I knew they would be just the thing! Not only are they adorable, they are HUGE (24 x 17 inches!!) I added a monogram in a punchy vermillion to make it more personal.

School is cancelled for snow.

There IS NO SNOW. Yes m'am, you heard me right. None. Sure, there have been a few flurried flakes floating around, but none on the ground. They melt as soon as they hit.

Are you kidding me?

Don't cancel school and tell my kids it is for SNOW. Because now I have the tiny hand, nose and mouth prints of four children all over my windows. Boots are ready to be put on little feet wearing at least 2 pairs of socks...gloves, hats and mittens are waiting by the door...the excitement around this place over the mere idea of building a snowman is so thick that you could cut it with a knife.

Sadly, you have to have snow in order to construct a snowman.
I need a hot cocoa.

Tissue Covers

This is a version of the Tissue Cover that you can find over at Skip to My Lou!

You'll need a 6 1/2 inch by 7 inch square of pre-quilted material and a serger. (I needed to make several of these so I cut out a paper template. That way, I could just lay it over my fabric and use my rotary cutter to cut around it...made the process SO much quicker!)

Then just serge all around the 4 sides, taking off about 1/4 inch from each.
Now find the short sides and fold them in to the center, overlapping the edges about 1/4 inch. With alot of pre-quilted fabrics, you'll have 2 different patterned sides...you'll want to fold so that the pattern you want to show on the outside of the cover is folded to the inside at this point. Now just sew along the two long sides, flip right side out, tuck in a pocket sized packet of tissues and there you go!

I made 30 of these in less than an hour! (But I had a little help from a certain second grader who needs these for his class.)

Cindy over at Skip to My Lou is hosting a "Made by You Monday"! She has a fantastic blog that's full of fun creative ideas, like her fabulous crayon roll tutorial! I cannot even begin to tell you how many crayon rolls I have given away as gifts and all of the kiddos adore them. They are perfect for when you need a "quiet toy" like in church, on an airplane, etc! As an added bonus, they roll up to be really small and can be tucked inside a purse or diaperbag. They can easily be made during naptime (or less than an hour) and are a great way to use up some fabric and trim scraps. I added a monogrammed name to this one for my niece just so it would be a personalized gift. You know you gave the perfect gift when the little recipient jumps up and down and squeals!

I have spent so much time in front of my machines, there hasn't been much time in front of the computer! Here are a few things that I happened to snap pictures of: The Truck and Tree design is a favorite for little boys (made a couple for the twins and 2 pairs of red cord pants as well!) The Wrapped Present and Monogram Ornament are on opposite sides of a reversible jumper that I made for a friend's little girl and I love the fact that even though the present looks like holiday wear it can easily be worn for future birthday parties!

The Reindeer applique! I love this design done on a camo Garanimals long sleeved T! He is a doozy to stitch out, though...but the end result is so worth it!

My machines are runing steadily...all is going well...and then WHAM! The serger decides to be difficult. I think Chopper is just full of fluff (and I haven't been good about dusting all of the fluff out of her, so I guess she had just had enough.) and that it's nothing that a can of air and a brush can't fix. My fingers are crossed...

LOTS of pictures to post, but the camera never sits still what with all of the piano recitals, music programs at school, football and cheerleading banquets...there will be lots of pics to download once I manage to get the time to get the memory card out!

Hopefully, everything shoud be in by the first of next week and I can start stitching. Damask Market Basket

I had a request for another market basket, this time one of the damask patterns! I think it turned out great. Again, I cannot say enough how useful these things are! Mine (one of them anyway) just seems to go in and out of my car on a daily basis...I always seem to have more to carry in and out than I can hold in my own two hands (plus I'm trying to get the twins unbuckled and out of their carseats) so I just pile it all up in one of these baskets, carry it in, unload it, reload it with the things to go to the car, and it starts all over again. I am horrible at dropping pieces of mail as I walk inside just because I have so much else in my arms at the time, but this basket makes sure that what I put into it gets carried right into the house! This one was requested because the recipient will be flying back to her home so luggage space is a premium...since it is collapsible it won't take up much valuable suitcase room!

On another note, the Christmas Village is going on this weekend and I plan on getting there at some point! I will try and take some pictures to post...hopefully this will get alot more of you to "think outside the mall" for Christmas! BTW, did you check out the new button for Handmade Holiday? Cindy Lou has a fun crafty blog that is sure to inspire. You should definately check it out!

Backpack Patch

I have already sung the praises of a fun and functional patch and I thought I would show you my latest project using just that...

My daughter had asked for a new backpack for this school year. Mind you, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the one that she had, and she really couldn't find another one that she just loved...but she really wanted a new one. One that none of her friends had. I don't know if you have been backpack shopping lately but there isn't a huge selection out there. But, while we were at the beach, she and I wandered into some random store and saw this one. She loved it. It was on sale and I had a coupon and a gift card. I loved that! The only problem is that it had the words "Trail Blazer" embroidered on the top, which was also the only place that a monogram could go. Removing the embroidery would have been nearly impossible and would have also involved taking off the back waterproof lining (which I was not about to do!) so she asked if I could just put a patch over it with her monogram on the patch. (I would have thought of that sooner or later...my head was still spinning over the great deal we were getting!) I found the perfect fabric in my scrap bag and already had matching thread as well. I think she'll love it! I can't wait till she comes home from school and sees it!

Raggy Angel

I haven't done much sewing with minky dot fabric, but I love how soft it is. So, when a friend offered me some minky dot that she had found I thought it would be fun to make her little girl a simple pair of pants with it and then use some of the scraps for a little swing top. (I adore those from Wal Mart!) I don't think I will be doing alot of sewing with that particular fabric anymore. I love how it appliques (but for you other embroidery gals out there, I did find out that you need to treat it like terrycloth and use a piece of water soluble stabilizer on top of it) but that stuff is not fun to sew with! It rolled, frayed, slipped and puckered all over the place! I finally gave up on the sewing machine and did it all with my serger which made the task much easier. Anyone else had that much difficulty or is it just me?

Now, onto the Raggy Angel...I purchased this design from one of my favorite sites, Embroidery Boutique. She has some precious applique designs and her "raggy" series is too cute! The fabric has a piece of flannel sandwiched between it and the shirt, so when you snip around the design and "raggy" it with the edge of a dull pair of scissors it has an entirely different look than a regular applique! I love this little shirt, and like the girl's snowman patch I did it on the bottom off to the side. Matches the pants perfectly! I can't wait to surprise my friend with this little outfit!

Ice Cream and Cake

Not alot of sewing going on around here lately...I thought it would only be fair to let you know why...

We are a family that embraces tradition...even those that probably need to be done away with. For example, I have always made my children's birthday cakes. And each year, I always swear that next year I will simply call a bakery and order one. It wasn't such a big deal early on, but as the years progressed (and more and more children kept on showing up) the cake requests have gotten more elaborate. I blame alot of this on my daughter's obsession with all things Food Network and those "cake challenge" shows. I try to point out to them that those people are bona-fide pastry chefs...they have industrial sized mixers, fancy equipment, at least one assistant and never on any episode have I seen any children running around under their feet as they try to work. But on those occasions when I mention calling a bakery I am instantly met with wailing protest, so I keep on baking and frosting...usually with no idea of how this thing is going to turn out and the phone number of the nearest Publix bakery posted nearby in case of emergency. About a month ago, I was presented with the request for a "sports cake". That's it. No more description given. "Something with baseballs and footballs", he said. I instantly pictured in my mind a sheet cake with little plastic baseball and football players that I could buy and stick on top. Hooray! Finally something easy! "No," he replied. "Not players, just the baseballs and footballs. Made of cake."

Huh?

"How on earth do I do that?" I wonder as I promise to block Food Network with our parental controls.

But bake I did, and I must say that after 2 naptimes, one late night and more glasses of wine than I care to mention here is the result: (drumroll, please...)

The large baseball on top was butter-yellow cake made in the Wilton sports ball pan, and the bottom "field" was a 2 layer chocolate cake. The footballs (Oh. My. Word.) need to have their own food group because they are so yummy and are Oreo Truffles. You can find the recipe at www.Bakerella.com.
It was a fun day filled with lots of great kids (and their awesome moms who brought them and stayed to chat and help!), great gifts, lots of fun and some yummy cake.

I have survived to bake another year.

Here is the newest design I purchased from Applique Cafe, and I have to say that so far it is my favorite design from them! I stitched this onto a Garanimal swing top (from Wal Mart!) but because of the high yoke I stitched it off to the side of the bottom. This would be so sweet with a cute pair of leggings or even just blue jeans! This pattern can be sewn in the 4x4 or 5x7 sizes. Here, it is in the smaller size because it works better on a toddler-sized shirt. I think my favorite part of this pattern is that it would be perfect for a girl or boy outfit so it will make a great matching brother/sister set. I also plan on using it for some fingertip and guest towels for some hostess gifts this Christmas season.

Monogram and Petal Patch

A friend asked me to monogram and applique some shirts for her little girl and sent the cute little leggings for me to match colors. The shirts are by Monag and have little ruffled sleeves and another ruffle around the swing-style bottom. The pants were both really brightly colored and had a really bold pattern so I didn't want to overpower them with anything too busy. This little petal patch from Applique Cafe was the perfect adornment and a vermillion colored monogram will tie the whole outfit together. So fun!

Christmas Aprons

I am doing this little apron for a friend's daughter as part of her Christmas gift. This is a premade apron, but still very cute. They also have lots of other colors available and the mom's apron as well, which would work for an older child. I think this particular size would work for a little girl 10 years and younger. Older children would probably need the adult size. These would be perfect for helping mom in the kitchen or for some imaginary play as well! The picture really doesn't really do this colorful little apron justice, but I had difficulty trying to hang it so it didn't fold over on itself!

These market baskets are so fun and functional! I did this orange one with maroon thread in the Monogram Wizard Plus "Arebesque" font and it should be perfect for my sister in law to carry everywhere. She and my brother are both Virginia Tech grads and she actually works there on the VT campus. They both love the orange and maroon hokies, so this should be perfect for her to use for tailgating and just about anywhere else she needs to go. If you know me well, you know how much I loved and admire all the things that my grandmother did. She also had a little set of rules that she chose to follow during her life, and she chose to keep Sunday as a day of rest. That said, onto the rest of my story...

The Hubs had asked me last night to make a baby gift for a friend who lives out of town. He and his wife just had their second child, a boy, about 2 weeks ago. (and y'all know how I love a new baby!) After the way the Hogs beat my Tigers like yard dogs yesterday in Arkansas, I was hardly in the mood to be creative last night. Today, however, I had some great ideas and new designs that I wanted to try, so after the boys went down for their naps and the two older ones headed off to practice, I went down into my "cave" to sew for a bit. I wanted to put one of these new button letter applique patches onto a 3-6 month onesie (which, by the way is tee-niny and a real challenge to hoop and get under a machine) but I was determined to get this gift in the mail tomorrow. I finally got the little bitty onesie under the machine, had the perfect thread and fabric picked out (I LOVE the combo of aqua and red, and I just found this little car print fabric a few weeks ago!) Isn't it cute?

So now I digress...

Remember what I told you about my grandmother?

She never sewed on Sunday.

Not a stitch.

She always said that every stitch you put in on a Sunday, when you got to Heaven, God would make you pick it out with your nose.

I thought about that when I pulled that sweet little onesie out from under my machine to admire it in all of it's cuteness. Notice anything?

Yup. Sideways. I flipped the onesie and I forgot to rotate the design after I put it into my machine.
I turned off my machine and closed the door for the evening.

Spirit Wear!

I warned you earlier...I am one of those moms. I would wear a picture of my kids as an accessory if I wasn't afraid that someone would report me to Stacey and Clinton. Anywhoo, I love it when other moms ask me to make some spirit wear for them to wear to their kid's games! Especially when they say, "Oh, just do whatever you think would be cute!" and hand me a freshly washed T-shirt. (Insert a squeal of delight here) I had fun and was so excited that I forgot to take a picture of the first few, but I just finished this one and had my camera close by. Trick or Treat!

I have finally gotten to the bottom of the pile of things I needed to get done for other people, so I took some time to do some Halloween shirts for the twins. By the way, Wal Mart has an adorable selection of long sleeved Garanimals this year...both crew neck and turtleneck, and for the girls there are the most adorable swingtops! I will post a picture of the one I picked up for my niece when I get the chance. I heart Garanimals...not only are they very true to size, but they stitch up well and really hold up in the wash. I bought one in every color for my younger two! Here are the designs I did for them, very simple but they have gotten so many compliments today when they wore them!

I am starting to get a few orders for Christmas gifts...WOW! It is hard to believe that we are only 10 or 11 weeks away? (Oooh...that fills me with a bit of anxiety as I type...I'd better get a move on!)

Sippy Cup

Here is a completed sippy cup. It actually has a straw built into the lid that snaps down when not in use. I love the little paw print fabric but it is a very soft cotton and doesn't have much thickness to it, so I serged it onto a stiff canvas. The great thing about these is that they are completely customized to suit you! Since all daycares and nurseries want you to have your child's name on all of their things this is a really functional item. (And WAY cuter than using a Sharpie marker!) They can be done very boyish or very girly for a gift that any child (and their mommy) is sure to love!

Here are just a few of the fun things I ordered: First, 3 styles of insulated mugs for toddlers, older kids and grown ups! These can be customized with any monogram in any font. Also, I prefer to stitch onto fabric instead of the embroidery paper (it just seems to hold up better) but I serge the fabric onto a cotton canvas to give it a bit more body. You can pick your fabric and thread colors for a one-of-a-kind gift that any friend, teacher or child is sure to love! Also, so many people have asked about the new European Market Baskets...the last group I ordered sold out quickly! These are so incredibly fun and functional. Mine has been to the ballparks, on picnics, to school to carry class snacks, to deliver meals to a friend, to deliver goodies to the bake sale, to the grocery store...the list goes on! I actually have 2 of them, and one I keep in my car as an on-the-go snack basket so the kiddos always have crackers, juice, fruit snacks when we are running from activity to activity. That snack basket has saved me from many a drive-thru!! I have also seen people use them to tote books, dishes, toys and even their sewing and crafting supplies. Superhero Cape!

Again, lots of sewing, no time for pictures of each thing. Now that school has started I feel as if the clock is chasing me during the daylight hours! I used to get alot of things done during naptime, but with four children in school and sports naptime is spent in front of the washer/dryer, dishwasher, sink or stove! I am SO thankful that during our remodel we left the original hookups for the W/D in the basement when we put a laundry upstairs...there are times I have both sets going at the same time!
Ok, onto the fun stuff...I found this awesome tutorial for a superhero cape! Since I am trying to "Think outside the Mall" for this Christmas, I thought my sweet nephew would love to have one of these. It was a super-easy project (pun intended) that I finished in less than a hour. Again, being a safety first kind of momma, I adore the use of hook and loop at the neck! Microsoft Word can't "read" the stitches that embroidery software can show you, so the best way to shop for designs that you might want me to use for you is to look at the sites that I buy from the most frequently.

Baby Gifts

Some sweet gifts for a sweet new baby boy. The golf bag (one of my favorites from Embroidery Boutique) with name on a burp pad, a Nappy Sax (to hold a few diapers and travel sized wipes) and a monogrammed Stephen Joseph backback.
The Nappy Sax I sort of derived from a smaller version that I recieved as a baby gift when the twins were born. I used the same design but with a few modifications...first of all, I made it bigger so that it would hold more diapers. Second, I have made some with a lining of PUL so that it is waterproof. Sometimes, you just aren't in a place where you can throw a diaper in the trash, and this way you can contain it without soaking the entire diaperbag! I made training pants for my boys and had some PUL left over, so I thought it would make a perfect liner!

CRAZY!!

Sorry I haven't posted in a long while...things have been NUTS around here! Between school starting for all 4 of my children, Labor Day plans and a bathroom re-remodel (yes, I did say RE-REmodel. As in, for the SECOND time.) it has been a bit (ahem) shall we say, "hectic" around these parts! I have been working on lots of orders and projects, but I just haven't had time to take pictures. And let's face it, telling about them isn't any fun if you can't see the pictures! Lots more Stephen Joseph backpacks, fun team T-shirts and baby gifts have been under my machine these days!
The pink gingham is a fun new design from Bunnycup Embroidery called "Kids Alpha" applique. It is fun and funky and perfect for kids stuff! This was done on a plain white onesie, but I added some pink gingham ruffles around the leg openings! That way, she can wear it by itself or under a little dress when it gets cooler...all the "frills" of bloomers with the warmth of an undershirt! This was done as a gift for a sweet friend of mine who has twins about a month younger than mine and she had a gorgeous little girl the day before they turned 2! I saw her last week and she looks AMAZING and the sweet princess is so adorable! I also did a burp pad to match and have plans for a few other fun things as well.

Little girl's apron

I have decided to try and get an early jump on Christmas gifts this year. I say that every year but this year I mean it. (Just like all of the years before :)...) Anyway, I have been working on a few things and I had to share this. My niece is at the perfect age to start playing "kitchen" and every chef needs a cute apron, right? I couldn't find a pattern that I really liked so I traced off my own (using my own toddler as a model. So far he doesn't mind trying things on for me, even girly stuff. I snapped his picture in it to have for later...I'm thinking it might be useful for bribery and blackmail in his teenage years.) I used a cupcake pattern that I already had, and tried to keep the design pretty simple since I knew I would be adding her name.
As usual, I reached the point where I ran into a snag. Most aprons have a set of ties for the neck and a tie that goes around the waist. I am a momma and although I love cute stuff, I am a safety-girl first and foremost. I don't like things that tie around a toddler's neck because of the strangulation hazard. The answer?
HOOK AND LOOP!

This idea was not my own, but rather that of another crafty blogger whose site name escapes me. I tried to go back and find it, but couldn't. I am a firm believer in giving credit where credit is due, and the credit for this idea does not go to me but to some other mom who has already figured it out!
I also added hook and loop to the wrap around piece of the waist so my sister in law won't have to keep tying and retying. There is nothing so frustrating to a toddler as having to tie something, much less something that ties behing their backs. She should be able to put this little apron on all by herself and get to the baking!

Double Trouble II

Two words: LOVE IT

We needed a few snack items for school lunches and ballgames so we decided to hit Costco this morning. It was a perfect time to test out the new cover. (Ok, so really I just wanted to test out the new cover so I bought snacks while I was there.) It works like a charm! I am a happy momma. There are a few things that I want to add like a toy loop (so we can hook on a toy and it won't get thrown to the ground) a safety belt scrunchie (I would imagine that those are almost as gross as the cart itself so I would really like to cover it up) and maybe a pocket on the inside so the boys could put a book or some snacks. I am also thinking that this would be precious with a sweet little ruffle for a set of girls.

Next time, I will actually go and pick out fabric. Since this was a test-drive and I really didn't want to spend any money on it I used some anti-pill fleece in lime green and some fun golf-ball fabric that has been lying around collecting dust. The only thing I had to buy was some binding tape to go around the four leg holes. (I love when I can use things that I already have!) All in all, this little project was a big success.

Next time, it's going to have monograms on it too! :)

Double Trouble

As a momma of multiples, I sometimes (often) have to improvise with singleton baby equipment and just make it work for two babies. Partly because I already have the stuff for a singleton that I saved from my first children but mostly because what I need just isn't out there. I have monogrammed so many of these little backpacks, and each time with a different font, style and thread color! They continue to turn out so adorable. My boys have been carrying theirs this week and it amazes me how they have held up so well. They have been tossed in the washer and hung to dry probably a dozen or so times and continue to hold their shape and color. My grandmother had a saying: "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without." One thing about our grandparents, they were green way before it became a buzzword! In fact, that's where the name of my business came from. My grandmother was an incredibly talented lady. She could entertain us for hours by finding everyday items around her home and turning them into something new and amazing! She was also incredible behind the wheel of a sewing machine. I had the best dressed Barbie of any of my friends and quite often my doll's outfit would match mine. That's because Granny couldn't stand wastefulness. She would use the scraps of the fabric for doll clothes, quilt pieces, etc... until there could be nothing else made from them, and then she would use the rest to stuff a toy or pillow. She used the clothes that we had outgrown, torn or somehow ruined to make the most beautiful quilts...all cut into hundreds of tiny pieces, then carefully arranged into an amazing piece of art... made out of scraps. I was explaining this to my daughter while we were running our hands over one of those quilts...naming each choir dress, flower girl dress, piano recital dress, and how they were all reminders of my childhood. My daughter said "all of those happy little scraps!" (Happy Scraps...get it?) :)

So if you love to monogram your children's clothes (like most of us do) and want to pass them down to the younger kids (like we all should) how do you do it?

With a patch! Not a patch like our moms used to sew on the holes in our jeans, but a cute, colorful patch in a coordinating fabric, fun shape and colorful threads! (or a solid fabric if you are using it on a busy print item.)

My boys will start Preschool this fall. Serious stuff. So serious, in fact, that they have a special backpack that they have to take to school. And it's NOT their cute little Stephen Josephs...they have to take these:

YUCK. I totally see the reasoning behind these, it makes it much easier for the teacher to locate the needed item in the shortest amount of time. I am all about helping a teacher out, they have one of the toughest jobs in the world as it is! They certainly don't need having to rummage around inside a dark satchel to find a sippy cup adding to their chore list. But they are dull. And boring. And, well, just plain un-fun.

But you know what happens around here if you sit still long enough...
There. Much better. However, it was not as easy to figure out as it seems. Because of the stitch count (the number of times the needle has to go in and out of the item being embroidered) are around an applique, if you try and applique directly onto the plastic backpack it perforates it so many times that it essentially just cuts a hole in it and the patch falls through. But, if you do the applique on a piece of stabilizer and then sew it directly onto the backpack it works like a charm! So, I used a seam ripper to remove the little rubber patch that was already on the pack and started sewing! Now the teacher will be able to know which pack is theirs (everyone in the class will have one of these)be able to see inside their packs and their momma will be happy because they are just so darn cute. (Just like the little boys carrying them!)

Lunchboxes and Backpacks

Looking around my sewing room, you can tell it is back to school time! Lots of lunchboxes and backpacks being monogrammed! I still have several Stephen Joseph quilted backpacks left though, so email me if you are interested in ordering.
These lunchboxes were on sale at CVS and we needed a couple of new ones to carry snacks to the ballfield. They have Microban too, so hopefully they should be fairly easy to keep clean. Not much to look at though...
If you sit still around here long enough, you're bound to get embroidered...

Guess what is behind this sweet little roll?

OK, so this has nothing to do with monogramming, but every now and then (daily) I will see a project that I want to try. And sometimes it is actually something that turns out just as I had planned! Look what is inside!

Happy little crayons! As one of my 2 year olds says, "MY COYORS!" as he clutches it to his chest. This was such a great little project to tackle and really took no more than an hour from start to finish. (including pressing!) I didn't even need to use a pattern. It just goes to show what any of us can do with our own 2 hands and a few "happy scraps"! No kidding, everything you see here came out of my scrap pile! (recycling at its most colorful.) Everyone in my family was commenting on how practical yet useful and FUN it was! A few new things...

When I saw the "twinadoes" pattern I absolutely had to have it! Any momma of multiples will tell you that there is never a dull moment in their house, and we are SO thankful for all of those crazy moments!! These can be stitched out in any color and these are a great example of how a few thread changes can really personalize a design! These two shirts were done on simple white Pro Spirit toddler T shirts and although I used the same pewter gray on the funnel I switched up the colors on the wording and used blue for the boy twin and a bright magenta for the girl.

The heart shaped peace sign has been really popular! I have stitched it out using lots of different fabrics (gingham, animal prints, damask) and it always turns out cute!

The beach bags are just another example of how you can take a simple tote bag, add a name or a monogram, and it becomes a really thoughtful and personalized gift for someone! These were for graduation gifts and I think they will be really useful for these college-bound girls!

The new computer arrived this weekend...boy these things have come a LONG way since we bought our old one almost 8 years ago! This thing is so much faster than our previous one but there are still a few things I have to figure out how to do! I love these sweet little backpacks! My boys were given theirs for their first birthday and they have been so handy for preschool, church nursery or a playdate! (Not to mention how adorable a toddler looks with a little backpack strapped on!) They are also perfect for carrying to gymnastics, karate, ballet, cheerleading practice... After SEVERAL trips to Geek Squad (lugging a dinosaur of a tower and several unhappy children each time) it has been decided that our old home computer should be put down and laid to rest. Luckily, I had saved all of my patterns on our external hard drive so I am still able to work on sewing projects! However, my photo software was on the old computer so I can't post any pictures of these projects...too bad because there were some that were so CUTE! Our new computer is being "built" and should be here before we know it.
I am so excited about new things coming in...backpacks, luggage tags, koozies, key fobs and market baskets!! Getting ready for fall, school, football and tailgating! Email me with any questions you might have, I have lots of great fabrics and colors to choose from!

Celebrating the Fourth of July, blueberry picking and playing with the kiddos at the pool have preoccupied most of my time this past week, but I have managed to get quite a bit of sewing done during naptimes. Here are just a few of the hats I've finished...some raggy and some monogrammed. It's hard to beat a cute baseball cap!
